The DIU comprises two parts – A Vacuum Sampling Machine (VSM) and a Density Analyzer (DA). The Vacuum Sampling Machine has a Vacuum Chamber in which a test crucible containing molten metal sample is kept. It is then subjected to a controlled vacuum of 80 mbar till solidification is complete. Another metal sample is solidified in Air.
These samples are carried to the PLC-based Density Analyzer. By following the specified procedure, densities of the two samples are determined. The Density Analyzer compares these and automatically generates a Density Index which is the quantitative measure of the porosity in the melt.
